This is why a test patch on your own wall is key. Once you've chosen a great paint, you need a great plan. Here are Consumer Reports' suggestions for making your painting project as efficient as possible.
Covering : If you are painting over a very dark color, choose a paint rated excellent for "hiding," and it should cover it in one coat. All top five interior paints listed above are rated "excellent" for covering. Priming : Modern paints that claim to be self-priming really do work, so you can skip using a separate primer.
Calculating costs : Paint manufacturers and retailers offer online calculators to help you determine how much paint you need and avoid overbuying. Be sure to check whether the calculation is based on one coat or two. Bulk buying : If a calculator shows you need more than five gallons, price your paint in five-gallon containers, which are often cheaper. Skip to content Share Icon. Facebook Logo. Link Icon. Would like to contrast white kitchen cabinets but still look ok with timber architraves and skirtings.
It's hard to suggest a color, as it will vary room by room as to the outcome. Your best bet might be to test out a few in each room and see how the light affects the colors. Also, the Home Depot paint person may be a good resource.
On the side, over the years we have used every paint brand there is and will only use B. We wait for their sales, which beings them in line with other paint brands. I just stumbled across your post and decided to share my experience.
Our home has both Edgecomb Gray and Revere Pewter through out. Natural light really impacts the color. Originally, the entire house was painted Edgecomb except for the master bed and bath, laundry room and dining room.
These rooms were painted Revere Pewter. Of the two colors, I prefer Revere Pewter. It is a bit darker and much cooler in tone than Edgecomb.
Edgecomb appears to be a little warmer depending on the amount of natural light that the room gets. After living with Edgecomb in my kitchen and keeping room, I decided to paint it Revere Pewter and really like the change.
I am very comfortable with BM colors but my painter prefers SW - they give him better pricing and he thinks their paint is better to work with. So this is what I do: Buy a sample size of BM in the color you want, assuming you are using a low sheen paint. If using satin or semigloss buy a quart of the color you want in the correct sheen BM only makes samples in flat sheen so to get a higher sheen you have to buy a quart. Then make up a large sample at least 9x12 on white poster board or something even heavier.
Leave a one inch white border all around the edge. Check that sample in the room it will be in to be sure it's what you want. Assuming it is, take that painted sample to whoever is going to match it. Have them make up the match, and then put a good size splotch at least the size of a quarter directly on your large paint sample and allow to dry.
This is the best way to be sure it matches. Note that with satin or higher gloss you need your original sample to be the same sheen as what you are buying, because higher sheen paints always appear about a half shade lighter than low or Flat sheen.
